I remember...
the float of leaf’s fall upon frozen ground,
crashing crunching sounds of booted footfall
upon the heaving earth
as it accepted winter’s tight grip.

I remember...
the wild cries of night creatures
that hung heavily
suspended in the frozen air.

I remember...
awaiting the return of the aurora borealis,
my rainbow dancing lights in the northern sky
and the chill of bone that would not depart
for many months to come.

Alaska.

Night’s crispness would often find me
circling our cabin in the woods,
seeking proof our adopted twin moose
had made it safely through another day.
Chattering squirrels cheekily chastised me
from nearby treetops, hoping to sanctify
the boundaries that lay between the species.

Alaska.

I remember...
stepping out into the boggy mess
of melting permafrost and snowfall each spring
during "breakup,"
the term natives and Alaska adoptees use
to describe the annual change
from winter's death-like trance
to spring's welcome renew.

Alaska.
I remember you.

I have friends who lived in Alaska for some time and shared much of its heritage with me as you do us all through your words Kacy.  Fond memories I am sure.  Hugs.

I have had a yearning to visit Alaska all of my life--and after reading your descriptive writing, I now have a BURNING yearning to head for Alaska!

One of my dreams is to go fishing for Arctic Char!

Ron, it's the kind of place that forces you to look much deeper than the surface.

Donna, thanks, though a few memories are less than wonderful, the overall memory is positive.

Nancy, thank you for reading and commenting. Yep, I joined Pips while in the Interior, and writing about Alaska was one of my primary connections with new friends here at the board.

Linda, just put those bunny boots on and go! LOL, it's still above freezing and snowless, at least as recently as yesterday.

(smiles) Oh Kacy, this is beautiful, sweet friend, I have never been there but I dream of going there some summer in the future when it's not as cold and getting to admire all its unique splendor! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, I remember too when you used to write so much from your former home, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Kacy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Noah, you've got to go in the dead of winter to really appreciate Alaska. The aurora alone is worth freezing your buns off.
But of course, the midnitesun of summer will energize you for 20 hours a day.

Hello Kacy

I have watched many documentaries on Alaska and each time the scenery takes my breath away and makes me want to go there.  How lucky you are to be there.

Take care.......Sue

You got some good memories,Kacy. They got me thinking about spring when we have'nt even had a freeze here yet.A cool north breeze but sunny and a high around 50 today.Oh if it would only stay that way,lol...
The leaves only turned color in the last week but they were starting to fly around pretty good today.
Alaska thinks of you too...

Live like it's your last day...
Dance like nobody's watching...
Love like you've never been hurt...

A visit to your wondrous state would be truly invigorating - though your verse brings it to life beautifully... Very nice, Kacy...

Bridgette, sorry to have made you homesick.
Hope all is going well for you in OR, but it sure sounds like AK has your heart and soul.

SY, yes, I remember you saying once before that you were in AK. So that aurora may have captured you some nights as well.

Nan, thanks for visiting, wish you could see and describe the rainbow of lights. I know you would write a masterpiece.

Ray, yes I have some favorite memories. You are almost having Denver's weather, LOL, the leaves changed and began to fall last week.

Vandana, thanks! hope you someday get a chance to see that aurora.

Marge, thank you for that! wish I could capture some of those lights and send them your way.

Sue, I mean it, that aurora is awesome and worth the chill, but don't you get something comparable with the 'southern cross?'
