Once upon a fireside rest as logs were fed from oaken best
a knock did come I do attest,  of which I dare wish not explore.
For in this knock, this chilling knock upon the now shut wooden door
a long lost sound, I must expound of once upon heard nevermore.

I sought to find among the flicker an instrument with which to dicker
as courage lost brought forth a quiver and suddenly I felt the need.

Might not this be that feathered fiend among the night in blowing wind
of feathers black now ruffle fluff and raspy voice of warbled gruff?

I sat and sought in squirming thought what has this dark of night brought?
Can this be a bad dream wrought or something drear a bird has caught?

But now the howl did cause a clatter upon the window and the shutter
causing me to cuss, to mutter,  as my old heart did skip a beat.

For this  knock, this insane tock brought me flying from a short nap
and I would like to swiftly clock anyone  who caused this rap.

“Rap again”  I say in loud reply to yet the unseen raven bird
You wretch of foul and wicked eye are again to be once heard.

This softly knocking tapping rap, though light and distinctly faint
Is most assuredly most quaint and I pray it would desist.

For once the tapping, tell tale rapping departs my chamber door
I shall return to softly napping of her,  my dear, my lost Lenore.

When I read your gentle rapping, about that strange and dreadful tapping, though you wished to keep on napping; sir, it shook me to the core. I gulped my tea and fanned my face, said, "It's a poem, nothing more". But still I read, of raven-flapping, how you threatened black-bird-slapping; and I marveled, "He was napping, that's why he kept closed the door. Only that and nothing more." Perhaps you should try raven-trapping, maybe keep a cat for scrapping, that would sure discourage rapping on your bedroom chamber door. Only that, and nothing more.
