Between Conception and a Daughter's Face
     (in loving memory of Michelle)

I must say the words that trip my heart
for Michelle you taught me about the art
the magnitude of the open space
between conception and a daughter's face

The swell is rare like someplace else
that childhood captured up a tree
and flew with breeze in kite believe
a place of smooth sea glass and folded maps

With foot no bigger then a finger
and startled slippery embrace of air
I see you there within my heart
as if you had been there from the start
a piece of me just waiting on my whim
wrapped in cloth right now I feel I am
still holding you in time backwards
my lock of hair I see you still keep
within your fingers past my weep

Somehow you knew that I was wounded in my flight
and heard the tears within my night
for you could see past fact of infancy
into the better place in me
with just your head upon my shoulder
yes you were the one that taught me
how to be your mother

Breast's swelling rich and true is gift   I see
not wrapped or bought but passed on free
like milk's first drop when cry opens a place
because of you I knew again
my mother’s first embrace

No hanky alert?  Ah...in only that,
I forgive you for reducing me
to a puddle...

the ache is too apparently fresh...

hugs...

You said this might be one that was best read with kleenex nearby....you were right. Amid the pain, there's a knowing thankfulness for what was given, what you were able to have; and a mother's acceptance, insofar as such an acceptance can be possible for a mother.

Your Michelle poems are so hard to read, and they give so much....maybe because they give so much.

I always take a deep breath and hold it when reading your poetry for Michelle ..

Each and every poem you write for Michelle brings a sad but warm motherly smile to my heart.  You were blessed with a wondrous child - She was blessed with a wondrous mom... What a lovely relationship... God Bless...

Martie, from so much pain, has come so much beauty. You write like an angel--and that is understandable, for you have one sitting on your shoulder...

Your words stir a knowing... even in those of us who've never known. Tender, touching, aching excellence.

Martie, nothing I could say would adequately express the feelings I feel. Your poetry about your precious little angel, Michelle, are beautiful beyond words. There ae so many emotions they make me feel, that I just can't tell you. All I know to say is.......

Heart Hugs to you from me
