Seeking the Fickle Click

I had been seeking the fickle click
the one that distributes the years
for I had rubbed out time
again and again
let it walk by me as I pretended
not to
gathering splinters as I held on to it
wishing it to stop pestering my skin
stop all those balloons
that float around me
and demand I count each one.

I had listened to my dear heart
wish around corners
skip all the cracks in sidewalks
climb the brown satin trunk of a manzanita
and hold there a leaf past time.

You know what I’m talking about
yes this walk into the park
where all the games run bases
and fall through circles onto the pavement
to bounce bubbles into the silk sky
and another one has past
and who has written the reason
with some chalk across my driveway?

There are reasons somewhere I know
for I wrote them myself once
and put them somewhere safe
I think beneath my thick skin
or nestled in that cardboard box
where lucky keeps his heart safe

And here I was with my big hands
trying to push away destiny
and searching my circumference for importance
and laughing at my own folly
and then I got down on my knees
looking for my spent tear
and found one Johnny jump up
growing in the crack of the cement
and coloring my eye with
the perfection of a minute

and for one of them   I understood

Paint it again....go ahead...I know that
it will look slightly different, though
just as beautiful...

Did ya find it?

The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn

"and searching my circumference for importance".....an incredible line!!!

..and it's when we gather all those "minutes" in time that some things, not all, but some things begin to make sense--I'm glad I did not see this until today, a perfect read for the New Year--APPLAUSE!!

Martie,

Loved this for all the depth in it.

Especially like:

"the perfection of a minute
and for one of them
I understood"

Those flashes are which keep us going, I think....at least me...Thank you for this. Enjoyed much.
