I almost don't want to tell the title of this till the end.

Ballad of the Green Berets

In 1915 they took a little rye
folded it in to a peanut butter pie
dropped in some chocolate, butter chips, too
to make up a sweet thing for me and you.

They wrapped up some lettuce leaves around a horny toad
took it for a walk up a lonely country road
saddled up a gator with some leather tack and tick
coiled up a boa round a great long stick

Mashed up some tators with some cheese that’s bleu
just like the French when they’re cooking for two,
cooked up some ham for the old city rat
with grits and hog jowls, imagine that!

Loaded up the wagon headed out to L.A.
figurin’ to git there in two or three day
ran aground near the Macon County line
from the quills that were headin’ out on an ol’ porcupine.

A week or so later, landed just south of town
looked up the street and threw their hats down.
Made it in time for the Veteran’s Day Parade
and now it’s all history bout the green berets.

Yes, the gator and the boa, were green, green juice,
the tators and the toads were a harsh chartreuse
The rye was a growin’ some minty chocolate chips
in that peanut butter pie that was oozin’ in drips.

Mark my word, when you’re plannin’ on travelin’ with wildlife and hats
watch all your tires and them mountain cats
but most of all don’t forget the signs
and watch out for those ol’ porcupines!

LOL at this one, though quills are nothing to joke about I guess. A good poem, and unique!

This is wonderful! So descriptive! Full of sights and sounds and smells... I enjoyed this so much.

~ I think I'll head back and "sing" your poem once more, tapping my foot all the while! ~
