I am learning masonry--
this skill of building walls.
Nothing kept in place--cement--
I lay the stones where they may fall.

There is art in symmetry--
it is a heavy stitch to knit.
I simply catch the stone that's thrown--
and place it where I think it fits.

There are times when walls are good, they may afford security, yet, sometimes they separate that which needs to come together.

I hope the walls of which you speak are the good ones and hold secure.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

serenity... This poem could mean so many different things to different people, it make me ask do these walls have a gate?   Paul

I left off building walls a long time ago. Now I pick up the stones thrown and simply add them to the walk of my garden. Makes for a much nicer view. Love the poem.

Ah Serene One...what a memory you stirred with this...my father, a "jack of all trades" was a mason, and...I will never forget once, when he was working on a brick and stone wall [yes, both, his design for a client who wanted a "different kind of wall"] and was talking to me as he worked.  He had drawn up the plans, presented them to the client, who made a few changes, then told Dad to "get on with it."

My dad's comment?  "The only thing wrong with his change, was he didn't allow for a gate."

I remember the front of that man's house, as well.  It had a screen door with bars.

Thanks for the memory, Serene One....

serenity,
Superb, but you must remember without the mortar you can have a land slide. LOL

A poet and now a mason?  Well,  at least
a master mason of words and how they all
fit together..

Good Morning Serene One...

came in to give the "secret handshake"

OOPS...sorry, now that would be telling now wouldn't it?

Thanks all, and sy? I deliberately left out the concrete, as I was thinking of this amazing ancient wall, (I think it was South America) that is built without use of any mortar. The bricks fit together so precisely that one cannot even fit a piece of paper into the seam...one of life's mysteries...hugs you, with kisses for all!
