I love Mom,
but I don’t see how
she can understand
these feelings I have
for Sylvan.

I mean
I don’t understand them myself.
It’s like they pull my heart
from one side of me
to the other.

When I see him,
I can’t speak,
my heart beats so fast
it’s like it grips my tongue
taut as...
as a string on my violin.

My hands
are clammy and cold
and I can hardly
get my breath.

When I am away
from him, and alone,
I feel so at peace,
in my anticipation.

Then,
when I’m with Mom,
I feel afraid,
even guilty
of my feelings.
I want to ask her
what to do  with them,
but,
I think she will be
horribly unhappy with me.

I feel as though
I’m being dishonest to hide
how I feel from her,
disloyal
that I place these feelings
above the tender closeness
we’ve always shared,
till now.

Think, though, Sara,
maybe she remembers being in love, too.
I know it’s hard to believe,
but our parents were there, once.

Isn't it funny the way children see their parents, as though they have always been a Mother or Father, nothing more and nothing less!  Oh the stories we could tell if they would just listen!  Enjoyed your poem very much~~

Hard to share or even reveal the unspeakably personal, especially when it threatens another's trust.

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Virginia, this is so very sad but true, sweet friend, it seems parent and child relations can always be so rigid and firm that truly a child always feels like a pawn to the king on a chessboard when truly the way it really is that a parent is teaching a child to succeed them as the king and helping them when they need it the most for their own good! (sigh) This is powerfully depicted, sweet friend, my heart goes out to you and I hope everything works out alright, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Virginia, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

thanks, all, I have to tell you it is to answer a challenge to write to a picture on another poetry site.

The picture was of two girls, one a little older than the other. I decided they were friends, then I decided, no they were sisters. The younger one is doing all the talking until big sister, who has listened well, responds in the last stanza. This is a 'story' that I know happens in many households, though, so it really wasn't too hard to write.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
