The Cat’s Voice

she sat there in the stillness
of a night’s ponderous silence
void of all consciousness

she did not even notice
I had leapt onto
her lonely bench
creeping into an emptiness
within her maddening confusion

silence, or so it seemed
for no word was spoken
did she really think
we shared different languages
when one look at her eyes
I could see through her strife

that restrained tear she fought
traded off all the sorrows
held hostage
expression was the language
if only she knew

bitterly lonely and alone she was
with the distance her situation imposed
I could hear her screaming
I knew she was breaking
there was an enemy in her

(Just two days ago I was sitting by myself at the park when a cat jumped up and rested beside me. I was in a depressed mood but its company and unassuming comfort intrigued me.  Or at least, it didn't fidget when my phone rang or when I stood up.  I felt the need to write this, only from a cat's voice)

Excellent...should be made into a challenge, to write in the voice of an animal of choice...interesting, what we might glean from looking out of the eyes of an animal...

Very cool poem.  Love the image of cat and person, resting on same bench.  And the cat pondering the person, very unique, very true to character.  Really liked this a lot!

This is a beautiful piece of poetry, Marie.
I think animals are very sensitive to our feelings.
Right after my first husband's death, my sons and I went with my best friend to her home so that we could plan the funeral.
I sat down on a sofa, and her dog sat down next to me, put his paw around me and started licking my face.
A couple of months ago, when I was just starting radiation treatments, we were visiting my stepdaughter, and her cat jumped on my shoulders...which I am told, is a gesture of affection and caring.
~ meowing at you, hugs
