In the Netherlands we remember the dead from WorldwarII on May 4th. At eight o'clock in the evening there's a two minute silence throughout the whole country. It inspired me to make this poem in Dutch, wich I tried to translate for you.

Eén dag per jaar,
zijn wij stil in Nederland
en in die paar minuten,
smeden wij een band.
Een band,
met ons verleden,
met mensen,
die er niet meer zijn,
met mensen,
die wij niet kennen,
maar die ons dierbaar zijn.

Eén dag per jaar,
zijn wij stil in Nederland
en met hen die ons verlieten,
smeden wij een band.
Want door hun moedig dragen,
kunnen wij in vrijheid alles doen.
Twee minuten stilte,
is alles wat zij vragen,
twee minuten stilte,
voor wat zij hebben verdragen.
Twee minuten stilte,
voor de mensen van toen.

~~~~~~~~
One day each year
it is quiet in my Land
and in those minutes few
we create a band
A band
connected to our past
with people
who are no longer there
with people
who we never knew
with people who did care
One day each year
it is quiet in my Land
and with the ones who left
we create a band
their endurance gave us
freedom,
to live in peace
Two minutes of silence
is all they ask,
so please
Two minutes of silence
for what they had to bear
Two minutes of silence
is all you have to share,
with them
I echo Sunshine of course in how much you have added to the site with your wonderful ways and words.  On this side of the world we hold "Remembrance Day", on November 11th, and do the same as you Titia.
(tears fall down my cheeks) God Bless You, sweet friend, we are all so blessed to have you share your traditions and values from across the ocean to us all, sweet friend, I too will join you in honoring those people on this day and remembering them! (kiss on cheek) I am so happy you shared both the Dutch and the translated version to us all, sweet friend, I am influenced greatly by Latin culture and I always love to write Spanish poems translated to English too and share their values, especially with Cinco de Mayo tomorrow! (BIG HUGGGSSSSSSS) We all love you so uch, sweet friend, this is fabulous! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Titia, thank you for sharing!
May love and light always shine upon you!
Love,
Your poem is beautiful, Titia..
Yes, we all have that day at different times of the year...as we should have. Those who gave their lives in defense of their country must never be forgotten..
The best to you, sweet lady with the big knuffels
Dearest daughter
I am in a flood of tears
so emotional it is for me,
to read your nice poem.
Everything come back in my mind
And I can't stop my tears.
I love you more than I can say dear.
