The faithful formed two Sunday
lines on the cement crust,
outside the blue corrugated
building, on the wind whipt
isolated prairie, on the
coldest day in memory.

The flagless pole beaten
by a violent rippling cord
whose pinging staccato lashed
in unholy frenzy, defying
stinging ears to keep pace.

Faces whose pores closed
ranks in a reddening mask
so petrified in numbness
that once sheltered display
comical winks and blinked
twitchings like frogs
unfrozen in spring.

The "regular" line entering
to fill booths, clutch phones
and peer through plexiglass.
We, the first dozen "contacts"
passed the detectors on wooden
legs covered by jeans which
warmed long before the
underlying flesh.

This jail's a crudely peeled
sardine can whose sharp edges
dare those who'd reach in them
from getting too generous lest
some bloodletting cause a part
of you to remain there.

Jacqueline walks out in ten
days and my weary long reach
which has held her even wearier
head above drowning will shorten
to a side by side and lawful
ride home.

Not where I imagined this would take me, but better yet...to a sense of overdue hope...

I wish you both well...

Your words made me shiver..not a pretty picture, but painted so well with stark reality.  Going home, Im sure, has never looked so good.

Your constance for her is as impressive as your imagery.
The wounded bird is now able to "try to again fly"
Heres to new beginings ....I wish her all the best...shes lucky to have you in her corner.

Rest knowing you have held her in your keep with your heart all this time, and now it is her turn to find her place in life.  I wish her all the best Richard, and I truly hope she makes it!  To Jackie!

Your imagery here is right on...I could feel the cold, hear the wind. I hope there are better, warmer times ahead for both of you.

Reading this the word 'home' took on a much warmer, comforting, and whole new meaning.
Well done Richard and I wish you both all the best.

Good news, Richard. And may all your future 'visits' be up close and personal, touch-to-touch. Big warm hugs to you, the lady, and the waif.
