The Orange Tree and the Cactus

I had to take a picture to see it.
To see the way they leaned towards each other,
one forested on the top with green spikes
and the other gracefully holding gold.

Oh, I know you are wondering
what I am seeing with that eye,
that circle which captures a moment
and holds it like precious truth.

I was wandering in the back yard
with my digital camera.
I saw the pond and trellis,
then a sunflower laying across the grass,
its body fallen wet and weathered,
but when I clicked
I captured the orange tree,
part of California’s gold.

It was when I looked later
at the photo still and lifeless
in the cool afternoon of my room,
that I noticed the cactus,
another side of California.
With dust and drained perseverance
it had become pulling thrusting exuberance.

They seemed so tenderly mated,
not touching or seeking favor,
just old friends in the yard.
In the grace of their co-existence
I thought about people
of mold so different,
colored by time and place.

We don’t always see who stands beside us
in equal dignity.
We see only the gold
and seek those who are the same.
In an orange grove we file
in a line that excludes the beguiling ways
of vine or pussy willow.

I have learned a lesson in love today
with my camera’s eye,
from two old friends in the back yard,
the orange tree and the cactus.

The feast and famine of wet and dry...neither one able to do without the other...

How like my backyard used to be...you took me home, little one, and for that, I smile with you in memories...thank you...thank you!

Martie,
You have a way of saying the obvious, but delightfully so.

WOW!!! Oh my gosh, this is soooooooo beautiful and indeed has a wonderful view of wisdom, sweet friend, typically out here in Colorado it is like a desert always but we just had a huge snowstorm and now I guess I've learned how El Nino too can adapt to us all! LOL! (kiss on cheek) We all love you so much, sweet friend, this is excellent! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Martie, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Martie..this is wonderful.  Not just the fact that the cactus and orange tree are standing beside one another like life long friends, but the fact that I have never seen oranges on a tree before.  How wonderful to have an orange tree in your garden!  To me this is magical!  Love this piece and the picture!  Thanks for the smiles today.

Martie ...  this is beautiful...and YES...it
so much represents US as well...All of us
who live lives wanting gold....getting
a cactus...when the thorned existence is
really a rose....

It sounds like opposites attract in the plant world just as they do in the human one.

Your picture is lovely and perfectly paints the poem.
thanks for sharing a piece of California warmth on this cold day in Michigan.

I remember this well... it's one of the gems in my library. *S*

It's been often stated that your unique way of looking at the world enriches us all when you paint with your words... And if you should miss something, the camera captures it for you... to see another perspective and share. *S*

I'm grateful for your eyes, Martie... and for the heart that pushes your pen. *S* This is beautiful!
