Daisy was crazy, or so people said,
The townfolk all whispered, she's touched in the head,
Roaming the alleys, pushing her cart,
Digging through trashcans, daylight her start.
She lived in a leanto, no more than a shed,
No running water, dirt floor for her bed,
Mothers clutched children, when Daisy came near,
Teenagers taunted, at Daisy would jeer.
Nobody knew, from where Daisy came,
In fact no one knew, the old woman's last name.
Speaking to no one, going her way,
Daisy kept scrounging, day after day.
One night Daisy died, and nobody cried,
Policemen came searching, the leanto's inside,
Found a small metal box; lock easily pried,
A stack of old photos, with ribbon were tied.
Photos of children, small girl and small boy,
Laughing and playing, with smiles of pure joy,
Along with the photos, an unsent worn letter,
My dear son and daughter, I wish I'd done better...
As the officer read, he walked slowly outside,
One day Daisy died, and somebody cried.

and many more will cry from reading this poem-- very well woven and sad

There is society where none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar.

This is very touching. What a tender story you have told. Makes one stop to think, that when we see homeless people, there is always a story and a family behind them somewhere.

If she who dies with the most toys wins, then can I have some toy boys please?

Sadly, there are many Daisies out there. This is a tender and compassionate write, Tim. Thanks for sharing and caring.

very very sad, reminds me of the last film Lucille Ball did as a bag lady pushing carts.
Nicely done!

Yes, everyone is special in their own way, though not always in a "typical" way.

God bless America, my home sweet home.

This touched my heart...New Orleans has a high homeless rate due to our allure to a certain type of "drifting, vagabond spirit" and our normally warm weather. This fact only seems highlighted during our rare bouts of cold weather. This piece reminded me of an article in tribute to a homeless man, who died last week when his cardboard box caught fire. R.I.P. Cap...

Great job with this Tim.
