This is a takeoff on "Cat's in the Cradle"  by the great Harry Chapin. This was about the joys of fatherhood long before I ever became a father. Not sure why I went the direction I did, but I could never sing the song right after getting this stuck in my head.

Verse 1

We had our first kid, just the other day,
Looked so much like me, I just had to say,
Son, I'm proud of you, you're a great looking guy,
He just shook his head, looked up and said why,
Couldn't I look like Robert Redford or Tommy Cruise,
But no, I'm gonna look like you dad, you know  I'm gonna look like you.

Chorus:

The kid's in the cradle and he's finally asleep,
It's the first peace and quiet that I've had in a week,
In my old mobile home with my beautiful wife,
It took just one night to ruin my life, yeah,
Just one night to ruin my life.

Verse 2

Well my son turned ten, without a scar,
No matter how hard I tried, somehow he made it that far,
When he was only six, I gave him to the goodwill,
And to pay me back, he switched my wife's birth control pills,
Now a bun's in the oven, and all I can say is,
This one better be a girl, yeah, this one better be a girl.

Repeat Chorus

Verse 3

Well my son is a slug, a drip and a slob,
The last thing on earth that he wants is a job,
And after eighteen years of feeding his face,
The only thing he does is take up twice as much space,
And I tried to get him drafted, because I knew,
Our guys would want to shoot him too, yeah, our guys would shoot him too.

Repeat Chorus

Verse 4

I've been deliriously happy, ever since the day,
My son got married and he finally moved away,
He's finally gonna pay for all of his sins,
He just found out his wife's gonna have twins,
I hope that when he sees them, they look up and say,
I'm gonna be like him,  yeah, I'm gonna be just like him.

Repeat Chorus

My apologies to Harry.

Roger

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh my gosh, this is sooooooo beautiful, it made me cry to feel the love of you and your fatherhood in this beautifully touching poem! (sigh) I am only 18, and am still growing, but I dream to be just like you and all the other loving fathers of the world and have the love of my life and a family close to my heart always! (big hugggsssss) God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much, this is outstanding! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Roger, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

*giggling* I used to tell my daughters they would have a child just like they were...*giggling* I get a lot of calls telling me they are sorry now that they see what it is like to be a mom...*grin* I can so relate to this poem. **big hugs**

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.
