Oh Poe, where did you go?

Within stretching shadows of approaching night,
I sit speaking alone to the fading of the light,
A book beside me, to read and hide me,
Till the candle burns too low and takes away all sight,
Forced from reading, to listen to feet that flee.

Along the broken walk to the wobble wooden stair,
To climb heavy footed to an entrance many share,
I close the old book, go to the window to have a look,
To find I’m too slow and you’re no longer there,
Quickly you went the way that noisily shook.

I imagine that you might have stopped to see,
To check a mood or at least to talk with me,
But you no longer care and word we do not share,
Just an entrance and exit along which you flee,
Passing traffic flashes bright, strobe sorrows through the night.

Gloom
