The Mausoleum

by Michael

Within these mausoleum walls
The poet sits, instead of walk
He's all alone in this dark place
So to himself he has to talk

The grayness of the stone he sees
A lighter shade than is his heart
The door was locked against his will
He's not allowed to be a part

Sour mildew and dampened chill
Try permeate to depths of soul
He doesn't fight to keep it out
Though it's not part of him when whole

The ugliness that's never seen
Within this place, the smell of bile
The stagnant air carries the scent
He knows it's come to stay awhile

He coughs the odor from his lungs
But each inhale brings it anew
There is no clean air for a breath
He sits and knows not what to do

The weariness of life's travails
Are haunts that he tries push away
But they come have a seat with him
So many things they want to say

Their smell is death and rotting things
They hold him close as he tries fight
Depression's demons come for him
But he fights on and prays for light

He cannot let them steal his years
And fill them with their misery
From their firm hold does he escape
Yet door's still locked and there's no key

Michael, often we try to use the wrong keys for those doors. There was a time when I could relate to these words but there comes a time when you have to let go of the pain. You hold the key to freedom. Powerful words and imagery. Take care.

Ditto with Brian, Michael...  but I do know these feelings well.  Now, if he can only bend himself and realize that there is no door...

Brian, Mark & Karilea,

This poem is about a person trying to fight his way back from depression, knowing that if allowed to do so, it will consume him.  Even though the character in this poem is a poet, this poem is not about myself.  I'm a a very optimistic person.    Thanks for the responses and a pleasant day to each of you.

You know Michael, this poem could be for a lot of people not just your friend.  There are so many poets suffering depression and writing is their way to climb from the pit of darkness, so I have to tell you that although this is a dark poem it is truly reality for many, and extremely well said.

There is always a door if we look hard enough and open our hearts to the light the emerges within.  This one rings of truth and much can be learned from it in my opinion.  Good write.

All writing comes
by the grace of God.

Depression can hold us down for the count, it's hard to fight back to the light but the effort must be made.Very dark but very well done..

Michael--You write of the darkness of depression so well...a cave with no way out is, I know, how it feels.  It is fortunate that there are medications now that are powerful enough to turn the lock for some.  Powerful, emotive writing, my friend.

I think that we all need to find that key my friend. . .

a story well told. . . the words take you there. . .
