Listening to every heart

An Amazing Story

Amazing how a spirit lives, in hope and in true
Grace and
How hard the times can be for some but
Sweet for others who know
The truth.  When the soul can hear a
Sound so pure
That lives through its own Lord, who has
Saved not one life but more. And mine is
A life that could be called a
Wretch, for what I do
Like thousands that have gone before. But
Me, O Lord
I have learned that
Once a man who has lived so wrong,
Was sore at heart and
Lost in kind,
But as never before,
Now he could not live.  "I
Am grieved of this journey, the darkies I
Found to be human and wronged, I
Was evil and turned a
Blind eye to the injustice,
But through Your grace
Now no longer will I ship slaves as
I forthwith in the true light do
See."

John Newton [1725-1807] lived as a religious and prosperous man who as a blackbirder made his fortune in slave-trading. Because of his religion, he knew the trade of man was wrong. Soon after one trip, he was struck not only by the Africans' soulful chanting, but a revelation in the wrong-doing of humankind, and thus, "Amazing Grace" was conceived. If you did not realize what you were reading, I entreat you to go back and read only the first word of each line downward.

Thank you for coming in.

Kari---an amazing story indeed, and one I've repeated often. Thanks for the tribute here and I am also amazed that I did not know of an acrostic type message...and sigh of sighs, feeling even dumber because I just ran a search on the lyrics and STILL didn't get it...am I just thinking too hard or what?

Loved this one--and it's lovely to read your words and be "home" if only for a little while.

I am amazed at all your words, an in awe of your acrostic. Slavery of any human should never be allowed. Even in this day and age it still continues.

Karilea~
This is truly an awesome piece of writing~
Isn't it indeed wonderful to 'research' a piece and share the knowledge with others ?

Such a marvelous piece of work~

The Cherokee rendition of this song sends chills up my spine~
Truly a work of wonder.

THANK YOU for sharing~

It is amazing the revelations that God sends in times of need.

Throw your heart out in front of you
And run out to catch it.

Dear Sunshine, a great read and a very inventive structure you created, I believe all man has the seeds of good and bad bestowed to him and believe it is from the heart of one true who will be redeemed if the side of evil for a time had taken over.

Great work.

I had to read this again for it is a "Sunday poem", and wanted to tell you I featured it on my own home page as the feature poem for 2001 Sunshine.  This was simply "amazing grace".
