Don’t Ask Me To

Don’t ask me to stay here beside you for one more heartbeat
Because you know how much I want to stay within your heat
But you’re not free to love me and there’s no point to this
I want to stay so much, to be held and touched by you is bliss
I could make excuses for myself and say I was willing to wait
But I can’t live like that my heart can’t stand its confused state
You’ve said that you’d do anything I want to bring me to you
Don’t you understand my love that pain I can’t put you through?

Don’t ask me to touch my lips again in a kiss that feels sweet
Because you know how much I ache to be there at your feet
But you’re not free to give me the love you say that you feel
I know you feel the attraction and that my love for you is real
I could say it’s okay that marriages break up and people change
But I can’t do that expect your whole lifestyle you to rearrange
You’ve said that I make you happy for the first time in so long
Don’t you understand my love that this can’t be our hearts song?

Don’t ask me to look once more into your eyes to see your soul
Because you know how much I want for my heart to feel whole
But you’re not free to give me your heart and I can’t stay here
I know that if I do my resolution to walk away will disappear
I could tell myself that I’ll stay for just one moment just one
But I can’t lie to myself when I yearn so to bathe in your sun
You’ve said that we have a right to love and it’s your choice
Don’t you understand my love that this isn’t our time’s voice?

Don’t ask me to stay and listen to your reasoned arguments
Because you know how much I want you to make me see sense
But you’re not free to give your love no matter what you say
I know you say that we could be together for ever and a day
I could try to push away the words that tell me it’s not right
But I can’t fool myself that another’s life this won’t blight
You’ve said that we should just take our chance to be free
Don’t you understand my love that this isn’t love’s beauty?

Don’t ask me to turn around and place my fate in your hands
Because you know how much I want to sink into love’s sands
But you’re not free and I can’t pretend that you ever will be
I know you say that love for you has always been a mystery
I could deceive myself and say the words that would tie you
But I can’t betray our love and you wouldn’t want me to
You’ve said that if I give you time you’ll sort out this mess
Don’t you understand my love that I can’t love you any less?

I feel like I am watching one of those reality based shows looking in on your life. You have many good lines here and I think it would be really nice if this could be made into a sonnet.. I can't tell you how to write one though.. but I think it would make a really good one.

Tita, thank you, truly I appreciate your thoughts and good wishes. Sometimes it doesn't matter how much you want something, you just have to realise that the gift can't be given. It's a hard lesson to learn, but the sooner you realise it the less it will hurt.
