Old Hurts and Secrets

one hour after arriving in town
everyone knows we are here
they watch us in uncertainty
wondering
what I am going to take from them
they whisper and stare as we eat
like we are sitting at someone else’s seat
at the dinner table
old hurts and secrets never die
sadly the legacy my family left me with
is fear, not respect
they feared them, now they fear me
it hurts me
long ago I walked away from any power
I might have had
a young girl finally approaches us
ask me if I am here to help the town
I tell her no
for when I walked away years ago
I walked away from any power
to help
or hurt

"...the rest is silence" (Hamlet)       Shakespeare

Yet they are able to hurt you...how sad, though you've written it so well!

Our power to help or hurt...is one we may chose not to use..but it exists and we never walk away from it, only from the choice of whether to use it or not..
