Intermezzo

All of my life
The pain of this good-bye
Shall be tempered by the knowing
That we loved,
And that you gave to me
All that the bitter years between
Allowed that you should give,
So that your heart and my heart
Shall sing, if they can, apart,
The separate songs
That were made for them;
And that our hearts shall find
In this singing
At least the peace to cry;
That the tears I weep
Shall be young again,
Love of my life, good-bye!
