Books

it was the part
of my childhood
that I remember
that which I cherish
as much as a boy
might have chosen
Treasure Island
or Moby Dick
which I read, of course,
tomboy that I am

O I read Beautiful Joe
and Black Beauty
for surely
how could I not read
about animals?
I so wanted to be
a veterinarian

but it was
Little Women
that kept me as I am
and I recall being
known as akin
to a horse
which of course I thought
well I am a Sagittarian
so it made sense
but then I remember
Jo was likened to a horse
and that made the comment
even better

I was very little,
too little to read, some said
but we started with
comics
in the Sunday paper
which led to comic books
and at three I was
reading alone;
Uncle Scrooge was
very rich
but his nephews
always taught him
something
and of course
Superman was my hero…

books are in
every room of my
house…yes, even that
room too…

magazines and cook books
rich and poor books
books from garage sales
and second hand stores
antique and new
for young and old
how-to and do-it-yourself
they stack well
and sit on shelves

never do I open a book
that I don't caress
the pages
for someone had a visit
by sages
you can smell the
print of the ages

books…
I treasure them
I'll never read them
all, but I'll be happy…
trying…

I couldn't agree more. I was a voracious reader as a youngster and it has helped me greatly though life...it is, unfortunately, a hobby that the computer age has damaged greatly.....ah, progress ....

Yes, sometimes we all fall under the entrancement of immediate gratification...but you'll be proud to know I've got three books under my thumb now...A Gesture Life by Chang-rae Lee is quite a quiet, interesting read...
