Summer's day on Rhode Island's peninsula
The sun shines brightly on Newport's castles
"Cottages" called by their builder
Extravagance in each detailed timber

They line the cliff on the eastern shore
Huge monoliths in stone and more
Each worthy of a lengthy tour
Each unlike yet worth an hour

If you've not time
Or your money won't talk
Good external views
Can be seen from the Cliff Walk

My name's not Vanderbilt
I’ve not big money
I can't conceive at all
To be a baron I’ve no clue
Why be a Pharaoh is a mystery too

But this piece is about the walk
An asphalt path a mere six feet wide
That lines the crest of the rocky cliff
From the beach south running with pride

Imagine a powder blue sky
The ocean a richer cobalt
White caps pure as driven snow
Cresting, collapsing
On the rocks below

Beyond the wrought iron fence
To your right
Expanses of lawn
Rich green with no blight

Indiana limestone piled
In monuments of grace
Every stone, every flower
Perfectly in place

On our side of the fence
As breeze caresses your face
Wildflowers, and water
Splashing with fierce grace

It's fifty feet below
So you stay high and dry
Beauty so magnificent
It makes one want to cry

Hand in hand we stroll it
Gatsby visions in our minds
Not to see the roaring twenties
A poor soul would need be blind

At trail's end we find a seat
As hand in hand we gaze
Thinking of the sunrise
With our horizon full ablaze

The salt air fills our nostrils
On the breeze a quiet bite
I see your eyes, they can't disguise
You're thinking of tonight

A warm embrace then quickly race
Back to the street so shaded
Brick walks and cars, tour busses too
One's perspective does get jaded

Brick Pub and shops, fill the afternoon
With harbor view, we've the sun's fall too.
The foods a Portuguese flavor
And sails take a sunset hue

We missed the sunrise with regret
But not that much I think
We still had wine from which to sip
And sweet places still to drink

We left our room a silent tomb
Thinking a stone we'd leave there
Commemorating Newport love
Others might see and share

Great souls have wills; feeble ones have only wishes.

I enjoyed the wander.

Thanks for the chance to read and reply.

Yes, I admit your general rule. That every poet is a fool:
But I myself may serve to show it. That every fool is not a poet.
