I am a baby,
                ...hopeless and small,
                I know not of knowledge,
                ...I speak not at all,
                Of things intellectual,
                ...no reason to care,
                Of hate and deception,
                ...I am unaware,
                Immobile and helpless,
                ...I cannot survive,
                If not for assistance,
                ...I'd be not alive,
                My needs are unending,
                ...forever I cry,
                What am I here for?
                ...answer me, why?

You are our future,
                ...what someday will be,
                You are an acorn,
                ...a budding oak tree,
                Your needs they are simple,
                ...a mother's sweet milk,
                A blanket for comfort,
                ...for skin smooth as silk,
                You are a dear gift,
                ...from heavens above,
                You are an angel,
                ...a bundle of love,
                You are the destiny,
                ...of husband and wife,
                You are our tomorrows,
                ...you're our precious life.

We are the children,
                ...fearless though small,
                We are the future,
                ...heed now our call,
                The world is our conquest,
                ...as we set sail,
                In our endeavors,
                ...never shall fail,
                We heed not dire warnings,
                ...of those gone ahead,
                For we are the living,
                ...we fear not the dead,
                What was is no longer,
                ...old ways forsaken,
                We seek our beginnings,
                ...new pathways are taken.

You are our children,
                ...what know you of strife?
                Subtle temptations,
                ...perils of life?
                How can we warn you,
                ...revenge and vice,
                Alluring quicksands,
                ...know you the price?
                Our machinations,
                ...as snowflakes fall,
                Melting protestations,
                ...ignoring our call,
                As enter life's battle,
                ...how can one cope?
                'Tis faith in humanity,
                ...in truth, faith, and hope.

this is one of the most splendid and magnificent pieces about youth i have ever read. as a representative of today's youth, i think that this seems to cover all the aspects, to see from all the angles. what is expected of the children, how their innocence is traded for independence, how we just wanna go out there and make the world our own! it is quite amazing and refreshing to read.

Everyone's got their demons.
We all got somethin' to atone for.

Mike,

What a wonderful piece of writing!!  Great look at children . . . for they are truly our future.  Great writing!!

Mike~
The mommy in me LOVES it and recognizes
each step on the stairway ...

The used-to-be in me recognizes my
own zealous efforts to do it my way !

Somewhere the two fronts meet ... and magic things happen.
It did for me and it did for my own children.

Oh, yeah .... that graduation thing ...
See ... there ya' go !
You parent you !

Wonderfully well written.
