(Significant rewrite of a 4/99 poem)

It is elusive
Trying to tie down thoughts
Like Will O' the Wisp
Or brush of Angel's wing
To conceive a poem
Stuck in the cervix of my brain

What line will give this verse the flow?
Which word conveys the meaning best?
What truth will print itself on reader's brain?

What metaphor, what simile
Will cause a turn of head?
Can a tenuous thread rolled thinner still
Tie disparate themes
Make the greater truth?

Or must I once again
Be visual, emotional, exposed over again
Drop logic down the drain
In favor of passion's deep emotion
Lay mental pictures colored,
Extreme or grieving
What picture will this piece conceive?
Can cruel logic wash away poetic thought
Or will concepts fresh and vigorous
Lay scents on poetic air
Tastes of exotic flavors
Reach through the ether to the mental palate
Only in the writing
Do I
Favor the penning
Over the conception

~You have to have a dream so you can get up in the morning.

Very nice, indeed, Wil... There's a real art in the construction of a poem - at least in my mind there is....  The trick, of course, is to make it appear not to have taken a week to write it... You've done a fine job on this  "how to"...

Paula-
Watching too much could give you a headache - I don't recommend it   Thanks

Nan-
If I've described your process too - I feel for you - sometimes it even gives me a headache   Thanks

Wil, ditto Nan and Paula. You've constructed the "how to" and made it look so easy.
How do you do it?
