Fire and Ice:

Frost's poem:

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favour fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

My response:

Both ice and fire for destruction,
A man can tame!
Two opposites meet in attraction
As a result of this reaction
The ice would melt and douse the flame!
But if one day it does expire
The world will cease because of love
Since neither ice nor blazing fire
Can mar enough
To damage more than heart’s desire!

"I will not whole die, my soul in sacred lyre,
will outlive my dust and will escape decay,
And in the moonlit sphere, my glory will not tire
As long as poets still remain" A. Pushkin

I am positively perturbed that you have not received more replies to this, my friend ...

You have chosen one of my favorite poets, and one of my favorite pieces therof -- and your response has done it proud justice.  Applause with fervor from the critic's corner!!

Full fathom five thy father lies,
Of his bones are coral made,
Those are pearls that were his eyes;
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange...

I think Mr. Frost would certainly be proud.

Master,
I had once written a response to the same poem, but I like yours so much better. But here it is anyway:

Ice and Fire

Frost says that fire and ice suffice
But now we have a new device
It’s called an asteroid, by name
The end results are just the same

A monstrous volcano spew
Or a quake that splits the earth in two
Would also do

Armageddon by any name
Would do the same
As ice or fire
Whatever theory you desire
They’re just as nice as fire or ice
They all will do
But my advice
To all of you
Put hypothesis aside
Let good reasoning preside
In the end, God will decide
For you

Liz

Nicely done, Master! Enjoyed yours, too, Elizabeth! Such talent in these halls!

Hey, btw, just the other night I turned my radio on to set the alarm and there was a show on (NBC radio broadcast, definitely a rebroadcast from some years back). It was biography of Robert Frost, intermingled with Frost's own recitations of his works and some other speeches he made. It was too cool... stayed up and listened to the whole thing.

Did you know Robert Frost would travel the country reciting his own poetry to various groups such as students & rotary clubs & chambers of commerce? His voice added so much to the words & lines & images... God, he was good!

Anyway, this is a tidbit of information you all might find interesting... Frost often ended his poems with two repeating lines. When asked why he did this, he answered, "Because I never know when to stop writing. I have to stop myself sometimes by repeating a line. Otherwise, the poem would go on forever." I had to laugh... I do that too, sometimes. LOL. I was glad to know I had something in common with a true Poet Laureat and poetic artist such as him.... hehe

I'll quit rambling now... *whew*... aren'tcha glad?

Master, I have always admired you for delving into the work of famous poets and the respect you show by reflecting your thoughts & poems toward them. Again, good work, my friend!

Thank you everyone,

Ruth, Frost is also one of my favorites poets, but I must confess I don't know his work too well.

Elizabeth, your response is awesome. The funny thing is there were two other poets (on other sites) who have replied to me saying that they also wrote responces to this one.... Maybe we should make it a challange?!

Dori Pen, Thank you for such a kind (and long) response. LOL I love when people ramble, especially when they have something interesting to say. Thank you!
