recently spent the afternoon AT THE ZOO, won't you join me?

Down shaded pathways
in the cool of the day
a peahen struts.

Barnyard animals
laze in afternoon quiet.
Suddenly...childsqueal!

Here in the zoo
no animal beckons me -
I am drawn to water.

Monkey habitat
rush of the waterfall-
I see only ducks.

Looking for birdlife
in their lush sanctaury
mouse crosses my path.

My eyes following
I see flashes of color -
Roseate spoonbill.

Bright wind and water
sing through eucalyptus trees -
above their song, cock-crow.

Enclosed together
the llama and the emu,
one stalks the fenceline.

That bewildered cock
keeps on heralding morning -
it is long past three!

Quick monkey chatter
wafts on a breeze through the park -
overhead, a jet.

I find the monkeys
away from their habitat -
they smile from cages.

Children seem taken
with this white handed gibbon -
he chatters back.

Here on this parkbench
surrounded by zoosong
I still hear the sea.

Beki-

This is a great poem about the difference in children... Children who are intrigued with the captivated wild, that they can examine without effort, and the child that is drawn to the passionate, free, adventuresome side of nature. At least that's what I got out of it... Maybe you meant it to be something completely different. LOL In any case, thanks for sharing.

Beki,

Nicely done.  My kids enjoy the zoo. They also like the aquarium. I really enjoyed walking through the zoo with you.  Good writing.

Thanks Danny    No tigers and bears...used to be a tiger but his habitat is being worked on I think..it is a very small local zoo. But I love going there......and this time it was quite profitable poetry wise. Glad you enjoyed it....
