I only had one shot, I took it... To try for the gold. Back in the eighties- I followed the Pro Rodeo. I rode the rough stock... Everyone thought I did well. But something was missing, It seemed that I, only, could tell. Too good for small shows- But not good enough in the clutch. “Almost” a champion... That one word still hurts me so much. “Almost”, a champion... “Almost” just won’t make the grade. “Almost” still haunts me, And colors decisions I’ve made. “Almost” a husband... Another hard ride which I blew... “Almost” a father... I guess that I failed at that, too. “Almost”, I hate it! My writing has followed the trend. “Almost” a poet- Is what they will say in the end. |
