I went over to the local store
Where I get my art supplies and more.
But this time around, I didn't buy food;
I just felt like sculpting, I was 'in the mood.'

So I bought a brick of modeling clay,
Took it home and shaped it okay--
Into the form of a dragon, just so;
I loosened my hands and let my mind go.

I mixed in some water, then used a blade
To smooth out his surface--what fine marks it made!
When I finished that, I was sweating a lot...
Why, just now, had it gotten so hot?

I got out the paint and started to brush,
His horns made of gold, his skin green and lush;
His chest matching horns, his wings done the same.
All I needed just then was a name!

Hmm...no, "Al" won't do in the least;
That was the name of my uncle, deceased...
Then I came up with one sounding good--
How about Sam? Sounds familiar! (It should...)

Satisfied with my work that day,
I got ready for bed, then stopped to pray.
I pulled up the covers, nice, warm and tight,
Then reached up slowly to turn out the light.

_____________
In the darkness, a voice could be heard--
Soft and gentle, no one it disturbed;
It said, so quiet, "Thank you so much."
And it gave sleeping child a gentle touch.

Isn't it fun to create things? I think it is...
I just recently made a little clay sculpture of a dragon which is where this poem came from...but sadly he never thanked me for making him! Oh, well, there's always computer animation...
My scanner's at the repair shop, so I can't put my picture up here...sigh...but I hope you can kind of imagine this!

Your poems always bring out such emotion in me and I can't explain it!  Maybe it was the phrase "loosened my hands, and let my mind go".  When I read your work, I marvel at your imagery, too.  Thank you for bringing your poems to this forum!

This is such a sweet poem!  Made me feel light - like a child.  I enjoyed this as I do all of your writings.

this was a really creative and lighthearted poem. Lightheartedness in poetry is hard to come by, good job!

A touching and evocative poem, LS...along the lines of Rene Magritte's painting of a sculptor embracing his just-completed statue of a woman, whose upper half has come to life just for him....

I know you can't control the creative urges, or schedule them for certain times, and I know I'm often guilty of the same thing myself, but I really REALLY wish these poems wouldn't come at 2 AM on a school night!!

Looking forward to seeing more stuff like this (hopefully at times that don't interfere with sleep or homework!)

Love,

Exile/414

Exile, how long before we see some of your poetry again ? Just don't make that at 2 in the middle of the night

~Spryro

Do you write that good? Yes my dear you do! I loved this poem. It made me feel like I was right there with you when you sculpted the dragon. And I am sure if he could say "thank you" he would. Thanks for the smile, like always that i get when reading your work
