My eyes will not close. Like a metronome, my mind ticks off the brutal burdens that are the hours of my day. I count responsibilities instead of sheep, softly naming each as they amass their meager strength to face the towering fence. So many sheep. Most flounder as they leap. Some rise, to leap again, tired but unwilling to quit, their matted wool soiled by dirt and clinging burs. Others cannot rise. Unfocused eyes stare but cannot see, and heavy breathing gives way to heavier silence. A fetid smell drives on those yet remaining. Should dead and dying sheep still be counted? So many dead and dying. Perhaps those should be counted most of all. My eyes will not close. |
