There's a word I fear is all too often used.
And sadly, for the word is oft abused.
It holds the key to any human's heart,
And is redundant in poetic art.

I'd like an explanation, if you please-
How four small letters brings one to his knees,
By now you know just what I'm speaking of,
The word in mind is what we all call "love".

"I love you" comes so easy to the tongue-
And often said in haste when we are young.
Yet years cannot erase it from the page-
Perhaps it is more painful as we age.

I'd like to do an edit on my mind-
And search each cranny, try my best to find...
Each instance where that word has played a part,
And carefully delete "love' from my heart.

Aghast, you gaze in shock at what I've said-
You have romantic notions in your head...
Of all the heartaches that I've had, maybe more than most-
To each disaster love has played the host.

You are right, "love" is an overused word that we walk away from too easily.  Maybe the "love" is not there to begin with or maybe love is not meant to be a long-lasting emotion.  Or maybe we just need to stick around until it comes 'round again - like that old brass ring on the Merry-go-round.  Maybe.  I dunno.

I also agree that the word love is used to often and to easily.
