There was a boy found crying
a mile deep in the woods
of the potomac river
just south of where they use
to row along the rough current
with their hands pedaling, side by side
synchronized,
falling with grace, winds back
writing the tears of the sky
onto the chiseled tracks
that led up towards the cabin

He was no more than eight years old
but his wide frame
led you to believe
that this small boy
could take the potomac river
and lead it to shelter

He carved into the ground, as if his own
for the woods would rather concede than admit
that this small boy,
who first cried for the wolves to take him
had now become its master.
