About Time

The clock strikes five, I'm still alive...
Time to start a brand new day.
'Feel my head spin, 'know I can't win,
But still fake that I'm o.k.
The clock strikes seven, hell and heaven
For now must wait, it's time for work.
In blinding fashion, such inspired passion
But lands me title of "jerk."

'Clock strikes three-thirty, sweaty and dirty,
I try to leave it all behind me.
The demands – the stares – the physical pain – the cares
Are always still there to remind me.
The clock strikes four, beat down, tired and sore
I walk through that front door...
No loving spouse, just an empty house;
With faded memories the only decor.

The clock strikes six, and just for kicks,
A measured shot buys me some more time...
The day winding down, I search for my crown;
After all, I'm the king of pointless rhyme.
The clock strikes eight, not feeling so great,
I rub my eyes and pinch my forehead.
So, so far from sleep, the minutes creep
Over ambitions so long ago dead.

The clock strikes ten, yeah, I lose again,
And I prepare to face my sentence...
But more hours lost trying to ease the cost
Of this mundane existence.
The clock strikes twelve, on through dream, I delve,
And still, none would perceive me.
I search, I long – open doors, all wrong,
For the demons, or hopes, that grieve me.

The clock strikes two, and at last, there's you –
The vision that I've longed for.
And yet, in my place, you watch a stranger's face...
You don't acknowledge me anymore.
Now the clock strikes hell, each tick, a knell –
A song of death eerily singing.
But the clock strikes five, God, I'm still alive...
And yet, all day my ears hear that ringing.

Stunted and lassoed from the git-go, Michael, you are following behind that old "I can't get there from here" train. I still say, you will someday be mentioned in the same breath as Poe. That's Edgar Allen POE, not David Allen COE. Heh.Heh

Exist.

That's what this poem is about. Just exist. Sigh. It's so well written I feel every line. Perhaps you need to shake things up? How about a naked run at midnight? (Let me know and I'll drop by to 'time' you! LOL)

Great writing and rhyme scheme. Found all the verses fascinating especially the end.

But I have to say, why don't you throw that damn clock out!!?

Thank you all for the kind replies.  And, JP, it was Poe who inspired me to writing to begin with.  To hear you say that I take as a great compliment.

I love this!! I just wish that the days we have to live over and over again were happy ones... not efforts to exist through the mundane with only Misery offering companionship. *S* Brilliant write!

P.S. I'm glad I wasn't drinking coffee when I read PDV's response... I'd be cleaning my screen! LOL But... if she needs an assistant, I'm applying! LOL

Well, I'll skip the "midnight run", but as always, love your writing....

Michael,

You leave me wanting to know what to say, and not really having any words.  That's what your poem did to me.  So, I saved it.

Always admire your poetry, Michael.
Btw, if PDV is the timer,
Suthern the cheerleader,
I'll be the checkered flag waver!
On your team, Michael!

James, yeah, that would be a great title.     Glad you enjoyed.

Ruth, well if you know anything about me and PdV, I always run naked for her, but only in the form of a wolf, and on the full of the moon.     You’re more than welcome to come watch, I will be beckoned if you drop a rose for me.

Jwesley, lol, glad you enjoyed bud.

Alison, that’s quite a compliment, I took it as one anyway.

Ms. E, Well know, if that don’t get me motivated, I don’t know what else would.     Count me in.

Prasad, Thank you, sir.  Love your signature btw.
