Song of Bells

These 3 a. m. sorrows
streak like dark-hearted songbirds,
shackled to the steel
of my body's blue sinew,
ligaments of the heart's great naked timbres,
atremor in its quiet music,

the tinkle of syllables,
overturned tea cups spill
a kaleidoscope of bellbirds,
gone wild in the sun, Summer comes
wringing in its rainstorms,
for the nightenglae's thirst,

and what love soever in the dark
there is, I wake to a phantom refuge,
and begin to pace an eternity of corridors,
among saddened topaz, this silence,
strung with a garland of white bellflowers

and tethers of a patchwork dress
in cinders and ash, are like
the sound of mourning, pouring rain
upon the empty panes, torrid
my eyes climb,
like a pair of hands
drowning

in the day shallows,
unable to catch sparrows
in midflight without breaking their wings
in red splinters, I enter
a guilty plea, trembling
and pale as a doe
trapped in the body,

the day quivers
like the amble of belled feet,
pitching headlong into oblivion.

Nicely composed.

A belled horse at dawn, pulling slowly its still-sleepy rags dealer and cart... and the bells are in tune.
