WOE WAS US
15 May 2011

This week, something terrible happened
that upset me
for the sake of my Benji-puppy
and the chewable parts of my house and its contents
that are not hidden away when I go out.

I couldn’t find Benji’s rope bally
when I was ready to go to work.
Woe was me!

I had wanted to keep his new rope bally
to introduce to him with ceremony
and celebration
and time
and appropriate games
and tentatively because I didn’t know
if he would love the new one
as much as he does the old.

I searched everywhere,
except in the fridge
and in the ceiling,
moving furniture
but the more I looked
the more it just wasn’t there.

It nearly broke my heart
to give him the new one
but for his happiness that day
and for the chewable parts of my house,
I did,
but in fear and trembling
that he would be confused
and unhappy,
but he took to it
with the celebration
that he greeted the old one
a hundred times a day,
but his Mommy’s heart was heavy,
worrying where the old one was.

I searched frantically that day after work
and the next, but the ball wasn’t
in any of the places I looked,
not the first, nor the hundredth time.

However, two days after the horrific incident,
with prayer and the aid of calm logic,
remembering that sometimes
my little boy throws his bally
into the air,
and . . .

happiness upon happiness,
I found my Benji’s rope bally
in a bucket, he couldn’t have reached
to retrieve it.

And peace and harmony
and happy barks
descended
upon the household
once more.

Benji’s new rope bally
is again in the cupboard
ready
for the pomp and ceremony
it’s official and eventual introduction deserves
and Mommy is no longer anxious
that it will take time for Benji-boy
to learn to love it
and Benji has his old bally
once more
with a spare one for emergencies
and when the old bally
is no more.

Hi,
I know you don't encourage critiques and this is not one. I want to comment though to tell you that the expertise in which you wrote this tender poem made it all real to me. I am a dog lover through and through as you obviously also are. I can't imagine what my life without my Katie would be. On second thought, I can, it would be empty and sad.

Playing with my Zelda and looking for lost balls is one of my main gym activities and I find them in the strangest places  ... so I understand this woe fully.

You put your heart so totally into everything, it is a joy to follow your deep emotions, dear Owl.

Love,
Margherita

This sounds familiar. My cats have several little plastic balls with bells in them. When I hear the bells stop ringing I know it's time to move things around and find their toys that they have rolled under the furniture.

Zoe has her ball. Zoe has her cloth rope. Zoe hides the ball from me almost daily. I truly think she does it on purpose. Sometimes I think Zoe is evil.

Thank you, Marcia.  I’d love to know what kind, colour and size Katie is.

Thank you for that precious detail about Zelda, Margherita, and for one of the most beautiful compliments I have ever received.  Smiles.

Ida, I can just see you and the precious little darlings.  Smiles.

Oh, no, Jerry!  How can you say that that darling, clever, cute little angel is evil – all right, I know you did it to tease me.  Now you will have to give her extra hugs and kisses from Auntie Di to make up for what you said!  Smiles.
