She was standing under a streetlight; cold,
A girl of the night and witness to hell,
Never thinking her life would be fool's gold,
Vaguely remembers when she was a belle.

Life on the street has so beaten her down,
Childhood memories and mirth long forgot,
She wears life on her face and it's a frown,
The only thing real; her pimp and her rock.

A heavily painted face and short skirt,
Blouse three buttons down and lots of cleavage,
Eyes with a look expecting to be hurt,
And she wonders about jumping from the bridge.

Don't sweat getting a room; alley's just fine.
She parties cheap, just for a coke mainline.

You remember the streets and this old snapshot is a good one Jerry.

It is excellent actually, dear Jerry. The sadness and the misery, as well as the injustice of such a life are so strongly felt. The picture reminded me instantly of "Lili Marlene", which has moved millions to tears.

Just like you have moved me to tears with this one. I have once listened to an interview of a "street woman" and all I wanted to do was hug her, she had a big heart but noone seemed to care for that. It is difficult to heal from such wounds.

Love,
Margherita

Oh, yes, I for sure remember the mean streets, Lori. Thank you for stropping by.

You are correct, Margherita. Some of these women (girls many times) have a tragic life. Some of them are generous to a fault and still think in terms of love, but they are too weak to jump the fence and fight their way back to the other side of life. Tragic. Then, there are others who believe the "straights" are the fools and the hustling gal makes the rules.

"She wears life on her face and it's a frown"

...a spectacularly vivid phrase...you captured her essence well

Yep, they are out there, steavenr, caught in the middle of their own insecurities, a needle, and a pimp's fist.

Haha Thank you Yann, the name is Jerry, but what doe the small matter of a "J" and an "L" matter, your heart was in the right place.

Yes, it is not a happy portrait when speaking, or writing about these girls.

Sometimes one can't turn away from the harsh aspects of life and so I read and so I feel sad but at the same time so thankful for my life.  Very descriptive, Jerry.

This was a story so vividly portrayed, life on the streets, the desperation, and helplessness, feeling of hopelessness and being stuck with no dreams left. You have a unique way of telling a story with your poetry that makes it interesting as it unfolds. Enjoyed this.

Thank you Helen. Life on the streets is a world all its own, and nobody should have to deal with it. Many choose that life, however. Death-wish.

Dreamgal, you are kind in your commenting, and I sincerely appreciate it. The street will take everything from you if you give in to it. A horrible way of life.

There are so many of them and it's so sad. You've penned their plight perfectly Jerry.

Yeah, when you're right, you're right Marcia. Funny thing is, no funny actually, but most of them think the straight, honest people are the fools.
