“The Good Old Days“

I long for the uncomplicated day to day
living of not so long ago. The times when
I could enjoy chicken-fried steak
smothered in country gravy all
sitting next to a big pile of mashed potatoes
and not know that I was clogging
my arteries with killer gunk.

Give me back the evenings of martinis before
dinner without knowing that my liver will
discolor, shrivel, harden and eventually
do me in, unless I'm lucky enough
to receive a transplant that my body may reject.

How I crave those blissful days of summer
covered in Coppertone and basking in
the sun for hours on end not knowing
the big “C” could take up residence at any time
and the wrinkles could eventually make
me look like the queen of hags.

Smoking I enjoyed since a teen, thought it chic
and relaxing - who knew the end results
of all those years could be the inability to breathe
properly or once again the danger of the big “C”.

Give me back the good old days
I've lived a good and full life and if something
has to do me in early let it be two slices
of white bread filled liberally with
peanut butter and strawberry jam.

White bread slathered with mayo, a big fat juicy tomato laid on top, another slice of white bread to cover it.

That and EVERYTHING you said in your poem.

I triple that AMEN!! A little knowledge can definitely be a dangerous (and un-fun) thing!

Maxine says it best...

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving
safely in a pretty and well-preserved body but rather to skid in
broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly
proclaiming, WOW! What a ride!"

Thank you and I agree, adding a slice of tomato to a grilled cheese adds an extra zip. Yommm. Just made myself hungry.

Nice hot fries done in one of those deep fryers in roadside diners that make them smell like heaven's scent.
A beautiful greasy burger jammed between two white bread buns, moustard, onions, ketchup, relish, embellished with melted processed cheddar cheese....oooooh the flavour!
Cherry coke with not too much ice.
The top it all off with a delicious dish of vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce and a sprinkle of nuts on top.

The good old days indeed.
Those years at the end of your life aren't the good ones anyway.

I really love where you're coming from in this piece.

Woman at a restaurant the other day said to me that she thought we're too clean these days and that's why our immune system is compromised....I thought about that and maybe she's got a valid point.

We were a rich family, we had a two hole outhouse, and two sets of clothes each.
Two wood stoves and a pump well outside the house.
Most people these days haven't experienced such luxury and don't know what they're missing.

Loved this!
