Mid-August and I'm a heat shimmer
A pool of mercury freed
from a burst thermometer
no longer bound by my glass column prison
I no longer climb skyward, but slither serpentine
to
sidewalk's crack
A bead of sweat rolls haphazardly down your forehead
an opaline iridescence prismed by rays of Helios' wrath
It's too hot for even the flies to scavenge
as a predawn-like still permeates midafternoon's bustle
It is not that I hate August
One cannot hate that which cannot be changed
Perhaps a breeze would be nice though
Lightly tracing its essence across the bridge of your nose
as soft as a kiss of an exploring lover
Even heat shimmers can dream
