Insolent red words
fall with sweet tenacity
upon the cohesion
of these rapt,
November evenings strung
under the cleavage of night
comes the opal nuance
of milkweed, tenuous
as the body's relapse
into that soft howling
of hackneyed light,

as it repeats
in my throat, some note
of forsaken ecstasy
grates against a Braham’s lullaby
of silver leopards, leaping
through dream
in a shiver of bells
and tambourines of rain,
bind the tendons
to the calm earth,

Elohim intermittent with the soul,
recurrent over the burning harvest,

rampant in Thy kingdom,
at last, come the prayers to defy
the waning flesh, folded
in the Southern guile
of psalms to soothe
the savage heart,
and bring to heel
its grave insolence of sunburnt limbs,
lain in this sandbox
of earth and red clay, red
hands play to escape paralysis,
and slow, the sweet tenacity
of a kiss, seals this dream, innocent
over the fine cleavage of evening.
