Her inner child
plays in the warm summer
sunlight, chasing butterflies
and grasshoppers

               while she huddles
               in her hiding place
               shivering, still as
               a mouse

Her inner child
sings nonsensical songs
laughs with her friends
dances dances

              as she bites her
              lip to keep from
              crying out cramped
              from sitting so long

Her inner child
runs to the kitchen
when her mama calls
to eat warm cookies

             her tummy aching
             empty numb not even
             remembering the last
             time she ate

Her inner child
rushes into her mama's
hugs, smelling the scent
of love on her skin

             even as cruel hands
             bury themselves in her
             hair and drag her from
             her refuge

Her inner child
desperately tries to
imagine a better place
a warmer, safer place

            as once again she
            is tormented, tortured
            used in ways she
            doesn't understand

Her inner child
cries

            even as she
            dies

Her inner child

Paula, there is a message here in this, very sad, yet, knowing that growth will come.  Loved the structure, and the feeling of this...like even though things are very tough, it is not the end of the world, but the basic beginning.
