Poor old skunk lie dead in road when on to work man sped,
his eyes cast not on the spot on which his tires tread.

Then forty miles in to day an odiferious scent was lent
as he opened door to car and on to work he went.

(I wrote this a few months ago, when twice I hit the same skunk--both to and from work!  Now how dumb is that??? Once should be enough, eh?  The skunk was begging for a poem!   Anyway, thought I'd post this stinky poem as I work my way to the bottom of the piles on my desk!)

Hope you enjoy.

Dark Stranger,

Thanks for your witty comment.  NOW, I know why my gym shoes rank as they do.  And... here I thought it was just the synthetic leather!

Enjoyed your comment.

miscie,
LOL We were traveling in northern California on the 101 and at 10:30 at night in dire need of a camp site. With one in sight we hit a skunk and decided to travel a little longer! Fun write.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Glad you all enjoyed.  It seems like there are many skunk stories out there...Perhaps, a skunk poem challenge?

and Larry, I don't blame you for traveling on a few hundred miles or so!!!

Thank you for taking time to read and respond.  Hope this put a smile on your faces.

glad to share this not-so-delightful experience!  Thank you for sharing your responses.  And...if you haven't encountered
a skunk once or twice, don't hold your breath.  If you have come across one?

Roniece,

In the US there are a couple of different types of skunks, the spotted and the black and white striped.  We call them pole cats, too.  Where that name came from, I have no idea!  To make a long story short, they have an extremely nasty spray that they emit and it just won't come off for days.  When our dogs have encountered skunks, it is almost impossible to remove the odor for 3-4 weeks; then, everytime it rains, the smell returns!
They are a rather cute small feline shaped animal, and could easily be desired as a pet, if their scent glands were to be removed.  Since that is their natural defense against predators, I believe it is illegal to remove the glands now.  Beautiful animal, but DEADLY STENCH!  If the skunk even sprays in your yard, it takes a few days for the odor to dissipate and will even creep into your clothes closet if you leave the windows open!

If you read this, tell me, does the skunk have an equal in Australia?
