Could Have Been

When those scattered, whispered words
skipped across schoolyard white gravel,
grape-vining along her thin legs,
upward undeveloped buds of hope,
to twine en route to her naïve ears
her imagination soared
because the real meaning of “bad boy”
was too elusive to some deeply
personal knowledge.

Oh, she wanted to be more aware,
and was it criminal, she wondered,
to steal, as she did, that glance, then another
after glance, that one dusky golden
west coast afternoon
at the boy in leather and shades
standing there beside that ancient tree,
as it seemed to her
that both were older than time; he was a god,
and she, barely goddess, admiring nature’s stature
of some idolatry must, or was there
another word for her sudden, greedy need?
as he, standing against the ingots of a late sunset

so mysterious, so dark, calling to her
without sound, without husky voice come shuddering
to her ear, so why did her spine shine
in quickening quavering, good, good, good vibration?

***

Years later, she thought of him again, against some
sunset grown red in retina, and he had not aged,
nor gone bald, nor full bellied with life, but still
she imagined a wife, children by his side, with some
speculative, dark mysterious smile
that his wife had never seen,

as he grazed some green of could have been
and wondered of the fires in the sky.

Lady

I remember you then, though I didn't know you...for you were so much like me.  The good girl thoughts of a bad boy must be universal.  My bad boy had a ducktail.  Thanks for bringing back the schoolyard and girl thoughts.

I wish I had a vocabulary like yours. Your words made it easy for me to paint a picture. What's wrong with a bad boy? Or should I say a bad boy with a good head on his shoulders *lol*

Ya know, I always wondered what gals thought
of those guys in school...
Those of us who wouldn't or couldn't wear DAs;
who wore close cropped flat tops, and were
thought of as "clean cut," were probably
considered mundane without the leather jacket
and t-shirt look.
It was a nice insight

My-o-my, I uttered a sigh or two while reading this wistful, nostalgic ~ and exceptionally well-written~ ~ poem!

Your poetry is always worth the wait! ~ Mind you, it would be wonderful if the wait wasn't as long as this time!

Loving White Light,

We all have one of those bad boys in our past. I enjoyed the poem.

pure magic Lady In White

it's all about those bad boys
isn't it?
and they never do age
or grow bald
and their smiles are always
mysterious...

I guess we all had one in our lives that cause our hearts to flip, without so much as a glance from him. One I remember well, looks, name the whole scene. Tall, dark standing nonchalantly by the school fence in Jr. High smoking a cigarette. Spoke to him and he kindly answered nicely. I don’t even think he was a “bad boy”, more like Fonzi I guess. You captured him well. martyjo

Sure enjoyed this, Lady in White.  Those bad boys always held mystic, but dare I go there?
An enjoyable read!
