in the shadows

.

In the darkest of nights
under sometimes bright stars,
thoughts swirl
like leaves dropped in whirlwinds of time
and shadows dance in lifelike stance
though I know
they're just cut outs,
broken bits,
escapees from the lockdown of light's memories.

So many years gone;
I look on my life sometimes
the way I wandered museums
when I was a kid
gathering history like reality's beads
strung on silk threads of fantasy,
some of the stories
I show through glass
with just enough ripple for safety,
for others the glass is kept darkly
their galleries in stark disrepair.

I do not regret my age
though true friends are hard to find,
word gets around I guess
that I've buried too many in time;
no longer am I allowed
to stalk prey that fought my way,
two legged predators disguised as men
with night time eyes
moving without mercy among our own kind,
nor have my talents been called for in years,
but like a horse bred to racing
now too old for the track,
there are times
when I can't stop the yearning
can't check my mind turning back
even though common sense would say
sharp days of racing are over,
and secrets stay safe by walking away.

Mine are different, I know
but I understand this from my own place in time.

"the lockdown of light's memories."

I wish I knew why I heard the rattle and bang of celldoors slamming...

wierd, considering I ain't never been in jail.

It's early yet though.

Maybe you can't race but it's still fun to run around the pasture a little

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

I like the pathos of this one.  You know they're not secrets unless you keep them.  I wonder sometimes, if in our last breath, they don't somehow all spew out to leave us free. Otherwise I think they would anchor us to this earth forever, as heavy as secrets can be.
