Green Bean Mother

It would have been ordinary
a warm ordinary or maybe a sweater cooler

On the porch with two chairs
my mother and I with a bag of fresh beans

The beans connected us
to crisp green love
where crickets sang along the driveway
summer cooling down to dusk

She appears gracefully now
when the beans sound so loud
that I know she hears them too
on some far distant porch
an instrument to our music

This pretty comfort roots me
to the sweet back street of home
as in just an instant the crisp wins over limp
to land in the cooking bowl

I didn’t even like green beans that much
not then

I do so know what you mean! I have similar memories of my Mom and I on the porch, snapping beans we gathered from the garden.

I miss those times. A very nostalgic read for me, Martie Flowers.

Beautifully written.

Loving hug,
Linda

What a sweet poem. I snap beans with my daughter.

snap Martie..

hope your beans were good
I didn't like them then either
but the joy was in being with my sisters
and my aunt
snapping those beans

thank you for this memory

When I was growing up, mother would make me help her snap those green beans too.

I didn't care for it much then ... either.

But time has a way of changing our attitudes about a lot of things.

Thanks for sharing!

You made the tears come Martie..
but with me it was with my grandmother I would help snap beans.

I remember a year
of three generations
fixing for supper's beginning...
as one...

and you brought this home to heart
with such warmth, and truth...

and sheer love.

Thank you so much, Sissie.
These are the good tears.

Granny Biz.....that's Elizabeth, so the circle's complete....one of my few memories of her is, of being taught to snap those beans, and be so careful to get the strings out of their back seams....a complicated job for five year old hands, and I so proud to help the big folks make dinner!

Be sure you teach young Liz to do that homely chore -- she just may remember you by it.

Ah  This was nice!   So many wonderful memories.   Precious times shared with my Mama. Snapping beans...shelling peas and butterbeans...shucking and shelling corn. Old tales told...family histories...
I also have warm hindsight memories of churning butter with my Grandma.  (hated it at the time)
Thank you for this.
