Lumpy Oatmeal makes me Crazy!

Tall trees smiled as they beckoned.
Soft-scented green branches waved with hospitality.
A small boy and a smaller girl
giggled secrets that erupted into shouts of joy.
Raggedy coats were half-zipped over sweatshirts of red and blue.
Laughing, they sought the mighty moose horns.
Oh, not the ones on the heads of large animals!
No – even small children knew those horns
were not easily plucked.
They looked for silvery branches, dead and dried
- prized for fire-starting abilities -
easy for smaller arms to carry.
The cracking sound of broken wood rang through the fall air.
Small hands gripped as the branches were pushed against bent knees
Knee to tree until one was declared victorious
Stubborn branches were laid against old downed logs
as the children jumped on them.
Bouncing until the wood gave way to their game.
Noses turned pink and cheeks pinker.
The chill was an indication of winter coming
And, oh, that was so anticipated!
“Load me up, Liz,” the boy would say
and his sister chattered as she loaded him high with dead branches.
More and more! – then higher until his chin rested on them
and his back bent.
She filled both her mittened fists with the smaller sticks
and talked endlessly as she led him home.

six years in the Interior of Alaska, filled with moose and kindling memories.
Thank you, for such a delightful re-kindled moment.
You've become one of my favorite writers here.
This will fit nicely in my library.
