This poem was from a "contest" with some friends, and it had very strict rules. I had to incorporate some awkward, pre-written lines. Consequently, it's a little rough, but that's the way it goes!

How Desire Truly Feels

I lost you so long ago--I know not even when--
That I write in this tome with sadness of ages.
Heavy is my heart, and Darkness is in my pen,
Empty desire is the thing that fills the pages.

True desire I know not--my pages tell me so;
Dark desires and yearnings are all that I have left.
You stole the very light from everything I know;
The bright sun of which my soul is now bereft.

The many soothing whispers, none of which you heard,
Were shocked from my mind as with lightning from above.
When you left me alone without a single word,
I hardened my heart to the vagaries of love.

I wander the halls of this castle in my heart;
Strong walls around it since you crushed it ‘neath your heels.
While longing to understand why you let us start;
I try to remember how desire truly feels.

I prefer to be a dreamer among the humblest, with visions to be realized, than lord among those without dreams and desires. -Khalil Gibran
