             Refugee

A REFUGEE is defined, as a person
Outside of his or her country, of
Nationality who is unable or
Unwilling to return, because of
Persecution or a well-founded
Fear of persecution on account
Of race, religion, nationality,
Membership in a particular social group,
Or political opinion,
By Presidential Determination
The Refugee Act of the United States

Makes one wonder,
In a time that stood still
Why such a brand, was declared on him
For he was within his beloved country
Not in a foreign land, but here in his home

He remembers the time of Sept 11,
When all the cries of humanity,
Were so worthily bestowed
Upon the loss of life so dear,
This brand was never even whispered,
In the memory of them
Even when,so many different people
From different lands, bled and died,
For no reason ,other than
The insanity of man,
Upon his fellow man

This word, seems so unkind to be spoken
When it is not, as it should be
Never used as a means to describe
The horror of the moment, when so many
Were torn and tossed, as a ship upon a sea
In the winds of the hurricane

Of horror and despair,
It is seen by many
But the few speak of him,
As a man without a country,
A man without a home,
Now wandering endlessly,
To master his fate
As best he can

In a country,
Where his government answered
Not his call for help,
In his greatest hour of need
Only instead, labeled him,
REFUGEE

As though he is of a foreign land
Only to be pitied for his plight
Instead of treating him with the respect
That any other American
Citizen deserves and demands

So my friend,
When you here this word
REFUGEE ,
Know well what it means,
For it is not kind
It destroys the soul of the one
That wears such a brand
For as it did to this poor man ,
It can do to you
As you have seen and heard
With your eyes and ears
May you never experience
Such a degravation
From this heart wretching word
REFUGEE
