Ken Around the Room

Some nights when
I look around the contours
of his teddy bear,
I discover
my son has followed his pillow
to the middle of the room.

He lies on the floor
with no cover against the cold,
away from those things
that might offer him comfort
when darkness tickles fear.

But, there is no fear
in his face,
his dreams tug the corners
of his mouth up,
his back is warm
and when I breathe
in his warmth
he is my smile.
------------

Never mine

I held you once,
a small miracle
attached and expelled
from the most intimate
part of me,
but you were never mine.

You dreamed beside
a yellow cat,
flailed your tiny arms
beside a warm mouth of
purrr,
soft and unafraid
each.

You gave no cry
for attention,
small specks of dust
and wee clenched fist
held your interest,
and the clamor of activity around
absorbed your need.

As you grew
a map unfolded behind
your green gaze
that passed me
and traveled away
into distant dreams.

There
you listened and spoke
with many voices
before you learned your own.
There
time granted you grace
to fill up the space
your soul occupies.

I watched as you
accepted the miracle
of moon and stars,
made things happen
with your hands,
grasped truth,
were angered by deception,
knew love,
accepted failure
and discovered the strength
of determination.

I held you once,
a small miracle
attached and expelled
from the most intimate
part of me,
but, you were never really mine.

Still, wanting to touch some part of you
I reached out to grasp your hand
and through some trick of time and mind
you had become a man.

And he has passed on to you
the many miracles
of your own love.

a fine poem
genuine in emotion
apt in diction
"when darkness tickles fear" is a great metaphor
thanx for sharing

Martie, I could not help tearing up with this one. I just love these poems!  My son is 32 and that is the way it is with sons so much of the time.  I'm still waiting for him to find love, though.  His rough edges hide a good heart, and he does his best to keep it hidden!

Such emotive and wonderful poety, Martie.  You are a master.

The first time I ever felt true love was the day my son was born. You've voiced the feelings of so many mothers. Thank you!

Martie,

You do know how to touch the heart. What a gifted writer, and no doubt, Mother you are. Thank you for rekindling memories of my babies, grown as they are now.

You are just wonderful!

Absolutely wonderful, Martie.  I never found my "voice" (such as it is) until a few years ago but I wish I had it when my sons were born.  No matter the age, they're still our "babies", right?  Oh, yes, your words stir the heart!

oh Martie
you have written a true love song
it touched me in so many ways
sons...
smile
dreams that breathe

"You dreamed beside
a yellow cat,
flailed your tiny arms
beside a warm mouth of
purrr,
soft and unafraid
each."

(angel friendship hugs) Oh Martie, this most heartwarming, unconditional love dedication to your dearest Ken made me cry because though I of course have yet to be a parent, I get ever so emotional seeing these velveteen outpourings of a parent's heart, and just the thought of watching a child blossom tears me up! (sigh) God Bless You and Ken, dearest friend, and may he have the happiest birthday, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Martie, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Your son would fit right in with my family and even fill in the gap. *G* We have 1 birthday on October 18th, 2 on the 19th and one on the 21st. *S*

There is so much beauty in the purest love of parent for child... you have written a gift of love he'll treasure always. *S*

Love poems.....but, aren't all your poems love poems?

I don't remember seeing one of yours, that wasn't a love poem, in one way or another......
