An Enchanted Evening on Courtney Lane

With exquisite grace,
an ageless beauty glides past me,
as the dusk is chasing the day
through the enchanting village
down to where I am reposing
on tree-shaded Courtney Lane.

I dare not ask her name.

She is lovely…
as a rainy day’s scent;
that faint wisp of ozone
that tantalizes
and mesmerizes,
and draws your memory
all the way back to childhood.

She is alluring…
as a bright day’s vibrant colors,
the red of roses,
the green of grasses,
the blue of skies,
and the yellow of buttercups,
all charmed by the magic
of the waning sunlight.

Though this riot of colors
pales,
when compared to this beautiful woman
who now stops to return my gaze.

I am transfixed.

Her eyes blaze with an inner fire,
one that I cannot hope to match,
but a blaze for which
I would gladly die,
if I was the one whom she loved.

She smiles
--that smile of knowing--
as her beauty has no doubt drawn
many a gaze from ardent admirers
and lustful scoundrels, alike.

Suddenly, she turns away.

My heart sinks with the sun,
dimming,
with the encroaching darkness
complicit in trying to hide her smile
and her stunning eyes.

I retreat into the growing shadows,
wishing to melt into the very walls
that channeled this charming beauty
down Courtney Lane,
to what I believed
was our fated meeting.

Then just as suddenly as she disappeared,
she is beside me.
Her piercing, fiery gaze
letting me know beyond doubt
that she is mine.

Never has a day passed since,
when I am all alone,
that I do not remember
with a wistful reverence
reserved for the sweetest memories,
that magical, meaningful dusk,
when I met my own true love,
the girl with the blazing eyes
who lives on Courtney Lane.

I prefer to be a dreamer among the humblest, with visions to be realized, than lord among those without dreams and desires. -Khalil Gibran

Now, this made me smile,
as I spent my teen years
on Courtney Drive...

thanks for the grin!

No one spins out a story as you. A secular bit of wonderment, no less entrapping than that of the finest spider's web. Once again, breathless.

Thank you, Kira.

It was a fanciful tale based on a real woman.  Those eyes!  Oh, those eyes!

Anyhow, she deserved a poem, don't you think?

John...I think you have some romance in your blood...once you have that there is just no way to not have it and when you have it, there is no way not to write it.  I loved this so I must have it too.

Hi, Martie!

I think you're right!  I am an unabashed, incurable romantic, AND I DON'T CARE WHO KNOWS IT!

Just to advise, friend Poet, I have sent this on to one of the [now lady] friends that grew up with me on Courtney Drive.  Just to make sure that she didn't see you, too!

Enjoying the reminisce!
