The Breath of Life

A puff of air, a fluff of seeds,
While all the world holds its breath.
The dandelion only needs
A little girl who gaily deeds
Her gift of life in place of death.

For dandelions have no hope
To spread their seedlings far and wide;
No other resource helps them cope
To cover Nature’s breathless scope,
Except on childhood’s wistful ride.

One puff of air will help to spread
Some progeny of Nature’s weed.
Though gardeners will come to dread
The budding in their flowerbed
Of playful children’s favorite seed.

For children know that, weed or not,
A pretty, yellow flower grows;
Considering with gleeful thought
--The beauty Mother Nature brought--
Springs magically where child’s breath sows.

Pinky: Gee, Brain, what are we going to do tonight?
Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky: try to take over the world!

"Another masterful verse. I am most impressed with your craftsmanship, insight and poetic style."

Who wouldn't kill for such a review (poetically speaking, of course!)?

You are officially now my number one fan!  Yeah, team!

Thanks, Denis.

I was in a wistful, childish place (which is really one of my favorites!) when I wrote this piece.

Hi, Sarkany.

Welcome to the team!

My dad was in the Navy SeaBees for 27 years, and retired out as an E-9.  He was offered a position of Lt., jg, but he turned it down.  He would have had to stay in for another 4 - 8 years, and I guess that he had enough by then!

Loved the voice of this.  Surrender to the innocent minds of childish play.  So simple, and so beautiful in it's less traveled places.

I like your wistful, childlike moods
and I like the little girl
who blows the seed
while the whole world holds its breath
there is nothing more important
than a little girl
and dandelion fluff

Hi, TD.

Thanks for your wonderful comments on this poem.  I am always enchanted by children who are "seriously" at play.  Plus, I used to love dandelions, too.  Now I don't see them anymore, but there are lovely xeriscapes here in the desert...

Hi, TL.

That's because I AM wistful and childlike.

"...and I like the little girl
who blows the seed
while the whole world holds its breath
there is nothing more important
than a little girl
and dandelion fluff..."

EXACTLY!  If only everyone knew this.

Thanks, TL, for the enchanting comments.

Absolutely enchanting John!
Personally I don't believe there are such things as weeds.
Since you don't have any dandelions,
I have a yard full I can send you?
Oh!  I don't think I can send plants across the border.

Loved this write..yup sure did.

Ahh..the old struggle with the 'weed'...the symbol of Man's attempt to control Nature.

A dandelion, or the cherished rose? Which will, you think, survive the sixth mass extinction? (Yes, there is symbolism meant in that.....LOL)

They also make a good salad.

Hi, Nancy!

"Personally I don't believe there are such things as weeds."

Thus my poem, "The Weed."  I think I posted it here.

Oh, and they can't stop you from sending seeds (I don't think?)!

Thanks for reading...

Hi, CG.

Where will it all end?  Probably without dandelions OR roses...

"They also make a good salad."

Mmmmm.  I love food...

What a lovely, lyrical, fresh "Breath of Life"!

Would the little boy in you like to come out to play with the little girl in me?

Delightfully refreshing, JLH!!!

Love this ...
"The beauty Mother Nature brought--
Springs magically where child’s breath sows."

All the children (and adults) do the same things at some time or other and yet we feel sometimes so distanced from each other.
Enjoyed the read, John.

Your critique message is inaccurate. You write you are "fairly skillful" which is quite a measured distance from what is displayed in this work.

You manage to do something many people are not capable of, remember what it is like to be a child. My daughter has declared our yard a protected haven for misunderstood plant-life (weeds), and I manage a fine crop of dandelions every year.

Your poem does justice to both my daughter and my yard

A wonderful work, in imagery, meter, and rememberence. I will make a point of looking for your futher thoughts. Do count me as a new found fan.

Hi, Sandra.

Thank you so much for your wonderfully kind comments.  I am not used to such praise, so excuse me while I catch my "Breath..."

You manage to do something many people are not capable of, remember what it is like to be a child.

As I said, I am one with my inner child...!

My daughter has declared our yard a protected haven for misunderstood plant-life (weeds), and I manage a fine crop of dandelions every year.

Good for your daughter!  Not only is that very cute, but one day she'll probably save the world!

Your poem does justice to both my daughter and my yard...

What a delightful thought.

A wonderful work, in imagery, meter, and rememberence. I will make a point of looking for your futher thoughts. Do count me as a new found fan.

I love fans, though I am not used to having them.  Oh, boy!  NOW, I have to work twice as hard to keep up my standards!
