Runes on a Transient Canvas

Pensive, at the summer’s end,
I drew a picture in the sand--
A Canvas for this transient land.
Borrowing what light would lend
Casts the shadows I would tend,
Where mem’ries make their final stand.

Sheltering from winter’s dawn,
To savor love for just this season,
Fall coerces summer’s treason.
Perhaps this last summer gone
Is prodding me to travel on.
Abandoning thought and reason?

Thinking of the days gone past,
I wonder at the ocean’s blue,
And contemplate the loss of you.
Summer love that wouldn’t last.
As summer passed by so fast,
The days and sunshine rushing through.

Light at last slips ‘neath the dunes,
As nighttime’s winds are blowing chill,
Ocean’s voices rising, shrill.
Bleeding, sand-etched, fading runes,
Catching ocean’s mournful tunes,
I feel your presence linger still.

Pinky: Gee, Brain, what are we going to do tonight?
Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky: try to take over the world!

Thanks, TD.

This was a "one of those moods" poem, written for that elusive lost love.  Summers' ends can be a killer.

Hi, TL.

That's a really sweet thing to say.  I hate to admit it (becasue I try not to judge my own work), but this is one of my favorite poems.  I am so happy that you really enjoyed it.
