Summer Song

As Summer melds into the Fall,
I dream of sunshine’s warm embrace.
Though gone, I conjure love’s true face,
As Summer’s sun begins to crawl
And deepened shadows mark her trace.

But summer’s waning leaves me here
Shorn of the one I loved to hold;
This summer love that shined as gold
Has faded as with summer’s cheer
--Bright colors blending into cold.

But, Oh! My love, our hearts did burn,
When summer sun kissed all our days.
The cunning trick that summer plays
--To coyly urge the leaves to turn--
As Fall consumed the sun’s bright rays.

A Summer song first faint, then done,
Soothed memories that dimmed to gray;
Much as a loved romantic play
Will linger as a summer sun,
As night encroaches on the day.

Oh! Summer, why am I bereft?
The Fall begins to claim the light,
As darkness marks the hole she left,
The burdens on my heart did cleft,
An empty space where love took flight.

So now I welcome Winter snows.
The ice will fill that empty place.
I care not for Nor’easter’s blows,
Nor wicked wind that tears my clothes,
As I abide with silent grace.

For deep within my broken heart
A Summer song has burnt its mark.
Reminding me that Summer’s start
Is but a time to which I chart,
While setting sail by Winter’s dark.

Then soon an ocean full of tears,
And wind-borne currents mad with cries,
Will fill my sails with grief of years
--And carry me towards Summer’s cheers--
As seething Winter slowly dies.

Horizon’s edge holds promise near;
To find the love that summer craves.
And yet another love so dear,
Will beckon me a course to steer,
As once more Summer crests the waves.

On peaceful shore, to cry no more,
I seek the bliss that Summer knows.
As Spring and Winter--lost to lore
--Forgotten; as my Summer shore
Thaws out the heart that winter froze.

Now, as I shyly walk the land
--To seek the love that Summers hold--
I dwell on how your loving hand
Once cleaved the walls that fears command,
To bring my heart in from the cold.

Your gift, my sweet, to man from boy,
As summer sun swept far above,
You showed me how to grow with joy
-- Forsaking every childhood toy--
To give my heart to Summer love.

Beautiful - sad but beautiful.  It's hard to believe that "summer" will come again but it's rather that than succumb to winter - right?

Thanks, Honeybunch (that's so funny to me!  That's what my dad still calls my mom--and they have been married for over 45 years!).

I appreciate your comments.  And I would agree about winter--based on when I lived up north for quite a while--but as I now live in the desert southwest, Palm Desert, CA, to be exact, winter is the BEST!  It's warm and clear and wonderful!  Now if I could just figure out how to get rid of all of the tourists...

John~
I so enjoy the mild Florida winters~
The beauty of your thoughts held me through the read~

'The Fall begins to claim the light,
As darkness marks the hole she left'

I do like that thought~

Thank again, Lady (TL?).

LOL  I'll have to figure this one out.

Anyhow, I am really glad that you liked that part.  As for myself, I liked the way the middle and the very last stanza both "flow."  I usually am very critical of my own work--always thinking of ways that it could have been better--but in some way I felt very inspired when I wrote this, and felt that some of the parts I wouldn't want to change...so unusual for me!

So thanks for being so nice.  It is wonderful to hear such nice words.

Hi, TD.

Thanks for the welcome.  I am humbled by your comment.  I do try to create nice works, but I am not used to hearing such praise.

Thanks again.
